Can you import a song from iTunes/mp3 into garageband? Im just wondering if this is possible. I want to add a song as a track, then record things and add to it. I can always record the song playing, but it sounds like crap. Is this possible? What about with a 3rd party app?

Honda Reflex - Riding a 60mpg scooter is your patriotic duty!

Works great. It breaks down each MIDI instrument into a GarageBand specific AIFF file (you can't just play them, they are only good for importing into GarageBand) Then you can import them into GarageBand!

I haven't used this yet, but it sounds good, especially if it allows you to use sound fonts.
Even better in my particular case was to use MidiPipe and Mighty MIDI to pipe the MIDI directly into GB while recording. This way the notes are easily editable in GB. Very handy if you want to change tempo, instruments, note velocities, etc.
This is a piece of cake to set up, and works like a charm, at least for one instrument/track at a time. The instructions are at http://gbxchange.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=769#769

I think you'll find this even easier to use than the MIDIpipe/Mighty MIDI solution. It gives you editable notes just like that method but it takes a fraction of the time and does not require any 'by hand' alignment of the tracks after you import them..try it, I think you'll like it!

I haven't tried this app yet, but based on what I've read about it, I doesn't produce AIFF files, it simply breaks out the multiple parts of a MIDI file so that individual instruments have thier own MIDI files.

have you noticed that some of Apple's own loops..

..have an .aif extension yet show up in GB as MIDI loops?

Click on the General button in the upper left-hand corner. Hp remote printing.

I was a little disappointed. I wanted to convert a MIDI Quicktime file so that I could import the MIDI data into GarageBand, not an AIFF. sigh..

Schneb, it's not actually an AIFF, it merely appears to be one. When you import it into GB, it treats it like MIDI. Hope this helps :)

Let my try to clear up the confusion here. Dent du Midi never converts the MIDI data into an audio waveform. The MIDI data from the original MIDI file is separated into tracks and encapsulated in such a way that GarageBand can import the MIDI data. The reason the files appear as AIFF (.aif) is because that is the only format that GB allows to be dragged and dropped on it. This method has some distinct advantages over the other methods mentioned. I hope this clears things up a bit. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions or issues.

Now the trick needed is how to export from GarageBand as a MIDI.

Overview

Though GarageBand 11 announced to import MP3 audio file, sometimes we still encounter difficulty in importing MP3 to GarageBand in various situation:

  • Situation 1
    • When I tried to drag and drop my MP3 files to GarageBand, the window came up that said importing.. etc., but then the little box disappeared and nothing happened.
  • Situation 2
    • I tried to import a MP3 into GarageBand, but GB hasn't recognized it. In My Songs menu, copy from iTunes says that there's no song available for the copy.
  • Situation 3
    • When drag spoken word MP3 into the track or space of GarageBand, I see an 'importing' message for an instant, but nothing appears in the audio track and no new track is created.
  • Situation 4
    • I can't drag MP3 audio files into GarageBand whatever from iTunes, from Finder, from the Desktop..
  • Situation 5
    • I recorded a very small piece of sound in MP3 format and try to import it to GarageBand for editing. However, GarageBand refuse to add MP3 audio and says 'xxxx.mp3' could not be handled becauseGarageBand cannot open files in the 'MP3 audio' format.
Reason 1 and Solution for can't Import MP3 into GarageBand

GarageBand only imports MP3 files which have the extension in lower case: '.mp3'. If you try to import MP3 files (like MP3 recorded from the Olympus LS-10) with the extension in upper case:'.MP3', GarageBand will refuse to import those kinds of MP3 audio.

Solution for Reason 1

In this case, change the MP3 file extension to lower case in order to import MP3 to GarageBand.

Reason 2 and Solution for GarageBand won't Import MP3 Audio
Import

Though GarageBand allows importing MP3, it only supports those MP3 audio files which have a sample rate of 44.1 kilohertz (kHz) and a bit depth of 16 bits. MP3 files with a different sample ratemight play back faster or slower, or even fail to add to GarageBand.

Solution for Reason 2

To successfully import all kinds of MP3 to GarageBand for OS X or GarageBand for iOS, a recommended solution is to convert MP3 to GarageBand more compatible AIFF.
