That's 'good' to hear. :) Well, of course it's not good for you, but I fear the day when I'm going to have to fix a bug in the ublio layer.
By the way, while the Windows checkdisk doesn't complain, Partition Magic is unable to partition that disk as well. Cheers Alberto

You must run CHKDSK /R /F DRIVE: and look for bad sectors in the final output. Otherwise Windows will silently ignore the error. Western Digital MyBook disks have a lot of hardware problems. See here: http://ntfs-3g.org/support.html#ioerror http://www.raoulpop.com/2007/big-proble .. dition-ii/ http://www.ransackery.com/western-digit .. r-data.htm http://sadjadbp.spaces.live.com/blog/cn .. !221.entry Erik, last year we tested the UBLIO version quite a lot and it should be just as safe as the stable version. The only exception is if the driver is not unmounted then (much) more data can be lost. Linux by default works in the UBLIO way but the kernel caches the data, not NTFS-3G. People don't complain about data loss. The difference is that the kernel regularly flushes data but NTFS-3G doesn't do it yet. We will fix this and the UBLIO will be the only driver ;-)

How about GParted? ( http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php or use SystemRescueCD http://www.sysresccd.org/ ) Any complaints there?

I'm not really worried about the ublio layer anymore, which is why I kind of panicked when I thought ambs only got the error with the ublio build. :)

Aye. :) It sure would be nice and safe to have a flushing thread running to make sure that blocks aren't just hanging around in memory when the driver is idle. Probably not too hard to implement. People are complaining about data loss sometimes on OS X, but only in special situations such as after a kernel panic or 'pull the cord' situation.

How about GParted?
GParted seem to be able to resize the partition. I am now trying to create another patition at the side (probably Ext2) and move the data. Then resize it again. Thanks for all your support ;) Cheers Alberto

GParted ignores the logfile where you have the hardware problem (by luck I happen to know this because I had the chance to write the NTFS resizer back in 2002 what GParted uses ;-)

Hehehe. Nice. I want, at least, to maintain the data in the disk until I have the money and time to get a new one :) Cheers Alberto

Check for bad sectors on your entire disk. If you have only one then that means you have quite many because these are remapped silently by the disk hardware on-the-fly to a reserved, hidden, internal disk area and if they can't be remapped then that means the reserved area is full. Typically this is some percents of the drive size.

This is exactly the issue! Data sit in the memory for too long on OS X/Ublio and it's not flushed to the disk.

It shouldn't be. We must take care about flushing when the on-disk data will be consistent.

This is basically true for all write capable file systems and unavailable because of hardware and physics reasons. The maximum we can do is to minimize the damage in such cases. In practice this is good enough to avoid problems almost always. It would be very interesting to have a test suite which statistically would test and evaluate the severity of data corruptions caused by power outage, system crashes, unplugged disks, etc. However this is extremely difficult and resource intensive to do correctly. One of the aims of NTFS-3G is to make it (one of) the most reliable file systems regards to such issues.

I'm having the same problem as blimpmedia, but my issues don't seem to be getting fixed. when I enter the commands into the terminal it doesn't seem to do anything whatsoever. I'm getting frustrated because I've been at this for several hours. This is the first Mac I've ever used, so maybe I'm using the terminal wrong, but what seemed to fix blimpmedia's last issue isn't fixing my own. I'm using a LaCie 1TB HDD and so the name I'm putting in is '/Volume LaCie', is that wrong? It's not telling me I'm doing anything wrong, it's just that nothing is happening and the only way I can see the harddrive is if I go into Disk Utility. I'm just looking for answers and I'm feeling stupid because it's explained so simply. Thanks

Interesting enough, NTFS-3G isn't working on my mac with any disk. Always the same error message. This time it is complaining with a USB Flash Disk. Formatted it, and it is mounted now. No idea what happened to all these devices. What can I say.. :-/ Cheers Alberto

OK. :/

Did you format the USB flash disk to NTFS, and it's working now? Or what did you do?

The simplest thing to do is to: - Attach your NTFS drive to a Windows computer. - Open a command prompt and type 'chkdsk /f <drive letter of your LaCie drive>:'. This will run a file system check and fix any errors. - Before unplugging your drive, make sure that you to 'Safe remove hardware' on the drive. This can be done by clicking a little icon with a green symbol in the lower right corner. It's starting to get difficult to follow all these different sub-issues, so could you please start a new thread if you still have problems after following these instructions? I don't want to be discussing two different issues in the same thread at the same time.

Yes, I formatted it using disk utility to NTFS. NTFS-3G mounted it OK, and it worked alright on a windows machine after that. Cheers ;)
